being finalised,
says Vajpayee
NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said on Sunday that he was ready to welcome his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif "with open heart and mind."
Vajpayee said in Lucknow that his Hindu nationalist-led government was in favour of free and frank talks with Islamabad on all bilateral issues.
"We would like to talk to him on all the problems concerning India and Pakistan," the United News of India (UNI) quoted him as saying.
Vajpayee said he extended an invitation to Sharif when he visited Lahore last month.
He said that his recent visit to Lahore by bus would go a long way in improving relations between Pakistan and India, Door Darshan reported.
"Though the visit was seen with much apprehensions, its outcome will go a long way in improving relations between the two countries," he added.
He said the changed scenario has raised hopes of much better relations with neighbouring countries.
Vajpayee said, "now there is improvement in Indo-Pak relations. We both have nuclear weapons. If we want, we can fight and die. But we can decide that we would not now fight and will settle the problems through dialogue. We will take steps for the welfare of our people."
He said that the date of the visit of his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to India is being finalised.
In reply to a question Vajpayee ruled out possibility of US-led attack in connection with Kashmir on pattern of Kosovo.
He said there exists no room for such an attack. "Since Kashmir is inseparable part of India, no such attack can be carried out against it," he said.
He reiterated Indian opposition to Nato attack against Yugoslavia. He said Indian government is in touch with NAM countries to adopt a joint stand.
He said India favours the resolution of Kosovo crisis under UN-mediation. "We are strongly opposed to US action against Yugoslavia."
He also visited Urdu Academy and awarded medals to writers and intellectuals. About Urdu being second national language, he said his government would soon announce its policy on this issue.ÑAFP/APP/PPI2ëCOTTON GROWERS ASK -KJ Date of Nawaz's visit.NTEXTTEXTttxtÿÿÿÿ3(ñ<Lë
