Jakarta plans to

build electronic

industry park

JAKARTA: Indonesia plans to build an industrial park to facilitate the electronic component industry, the Bisnis Indonesia daily reported on Monday.

Ardiyansah, an electronic industry director at the Ministry for Industry and Trade was quoted as saying that the government was planning to give special tariff treatment for raw material imports for component industries to be located in the park.

Ardiyansah, said a 100-hectare plot of land in Karawang, west Java, was targeted to be the first electronic component industry park which would enjoy tariff treatment because it would be easier for the customs and excise tax officials to control.

He said the possible move was designed to help cut imports of electronic components, worth some $1.6 billion last year.

Ardiyansah said raw material import tariffs were currently higher than the cost of components themselves, which was not helpful to develop an electronic component industry.

He said some 50 Japanese component industry investors would visit Indonesia soon to conduct studies on possible investment.-Reuter
