Lahore markets
closed on Tajiran
strike call
RECORDER REPORT
LAHORE: Business activity in the main commercial centres across the provincial metropolis remained suspended on Saturday, in response to the strike call by the Anjuman-e-Tajiran, Punjab, to mourn the alleged killing of the PML(N) activist by the police on Thursday.
All the main wholesale markets were closed, though the call elicited only a partial response in some residential areas. All medical stores and food centres remained open.
Since it was not a wheel-jam strike, the traffic did not stop. But lesser number of vehicles were plying on the roads because of Saturday being a holiday in the government departments. Public transport was plying as usual.
PML(N) activists staged protest rallies in their respective areas to express resentment against the killing of Javed Ashraf. They also burned tyres and tried to block the roads. Heavy contingents of police were deputed at almost all the main commercial centres of the city to avoid any untoward happening.
A survey conducted by the Business Recorder revealed that all the major commercial centres of the city observed complete shut out. These included all the markets on The Mall, Hall Road (electronic's market) Anarkali, Akbari Mandi, Paper Market, Brandreth Road, Iron market, Landa Bazar, Shah Alam Market, Nila Gumbad, Pakistan Cloth market, Azam Cloth Market, Ichhra Bazar and Auto market (four and two-wheelers).
