PCSI guidelines for
production of better
quality cotton
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cotton Standard Institute (PCSI) a government owned organization to produce good quality cotton, has asked the growers to take practical steps at the time of harvesting cotton to introduce it in the world market in accordance with international standard.
The institute has laid down certain guidelines for picking of "phutti" to receive good price for its production and crop.
The institute underlined that phutti should be picked up when 60 percent of balls had fully blossomed starting at 10 am every day. Its picking should be started from lower part of plant in a single row and be kept at a clean and dry place. Before placing phutti in bags, unripe balls should be set aside and extra care be taken that cotton was fully protected while packed.
The institute appreciated ginners' attitude towards adopting modern techniques and introducing better grading which was must to achieve better result and good name for Pakistan.
Better ginning and excellent grading was engaging utmost attention of the government so that it won international standard. This was essential to get better price for its thread.
The creation of institute was an essential part of this effort which was always ready to help ginners.
For achieving better results ginners should evolve gradation of cotton, buy only those phuttis which was clean and picked in a systematic manner. The phutti should be dry and should further be processed by spreading it on brick-made platform and content of moisture should be 5.8 percent.
Phutti should be put through pre-cleaners to remove any dirt in it and ginning factories should have separate sample room for judging gradation of cotton.-PPI
