into Karachi

KARACHI: CIA Karachi foiled an attempt to smuggle arms into Karachi and recovered huge quantity of weapons being smuggled in from Quetta on Friday.
The arms recovered included 54 Sub-Machine Guns, 35,000 catridges, 14 Pistols of 9 m.m. calibre alongwith magazines, four bags containing 20 kg explosive, 626 TNT demolition blocks, 100 Electric Detonators, 40 Hand Grenades and 100 catridges of 9 m.m.
Police said the SMGs can also be used for firing rockets where TNT demolition blocks were enough for exploding many number of buildings.
According to details information was received here from Ghotki Police that a Truck No. PRN-9827 was heading towards Karachi from Quetta via Dehrki with huge quantity of arms and ammunitions packed in waxed bundles.
On receipt of tip DSPs Civil Lines Ashgar Ali Shah and Abdul Sattar Detho, deputed Sub-Inspectors Zeeshan Kazmi, Sarwar Khan, Dost Muhammad and Aleem Lashari to catch the truck.
During checking on Super Highway the police intercepted the suspected truck. When signalled to stop, the truck driver tried to speed away but it was stopped by the party.
During search of the truck the police recovered the wax bundles containing arms ammunition and explosives.
Police believe that the arms and explosives were being brought here to carry out large scale destruction in the city as well using it for terrorist activities.
According to the police both truck drivers and the cleaner have been arrested and cases under Arms Ordinance and Explosive Act registered.
The Federal Interior Minister Maj. Gen. (Retd) Naseerullah Babar had told journalists on Thursday that all borders have been sealed to check smuggling of arms and other weapons into Karachi which were of late being used for terrorist activities.
He had also told the newsmen that various agencies were looking into the conduct of certain agencies at Peshawar whose officials were suspected of responsible for smuggling of weapons to Karachi.-APP
