Drive against
smoke emitting
vehicles from
tomorrow
KARACHI: The Karachi traffic police has decided to launch a month-long campaign against smoke emitting vehicles of all types from August 28.
This was stated by the Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Police, Mohammad Umar.
Talking to PPI the DIG said that despite warning to the owners of vehicles, they did not care to take remedial measures in this connection. He said the smoke-emitting vehicles are main cause of air pollution in the sprawling city of Karachi.
Umar, however, warned that the defective vehicles during checking would be pounded over and its over all fitness will also be examined. In case of non-compliance of fitness standard, the fitness certificate of such vehicles would be cancelled rendering them road unworthy.
The DIG in response to a complaint that some of private buses, coaches and even mini-buses play audio cassettes despite public protest, directed the traffic officials on the roads to seize such radios as well as tape recorders from the vehicles and impose fine on them. Any negligence on their part would be severely dealt with, he added.
He also appealed to the general public to observe traffic rules and embark on buses only at bus stops to avoid any incident. He at the sametime warned the drivers not to stop their buses or vehicles in the middle of the roads. This is serious violation and that might endanger the lives of the passengers, he added.-PPI
