ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister and Chairperson Pakistan People's Party, Benazir Bhutto, has appointed Senator Shafqat Mahmood, currently Deputy Information Secretary of the party, as Secretary Information (Acting) of the PPP. It may be recalled that this post had fallen vacant due to the appointment of Kamal Azfar as Governor Sindh.

Senator Shafqat Mahmood had been an official spokesman of the party during the time Pakistan People's Party was in the opposition from 1990 to 1993. He was also Director/Incharge Central Secretariat of the Pakistan People's Party in Islamabad. A member of the Central Executive Committee of the party, Shafqat Mahmood, was elected Senator in March, 1994, for a six-year-term. He represents the federal capital territory in the Senate.

A graduate of Government College, Lahore, Senator Shafqat Mahmood also has a master degree from Harvard University, USA. Before joining politics, he was a civil servant, and amongst other jobs, held positions of Deputy Commissioner in Dera Ghazi Khan, Gujranwala and Islamabad.-APP
