11 die in BD floods
DHAKA: At least 11 people have been killed in the latest floods sweeping Bangladesh and they may spread further as major rivers are flowing above danger levels, officials said on Wednesday.
They said three children and a man were drowned on Tuesday in Lalmonirhat, one of 15 districts hit by current floods set off by heavy rain. Seven others died earlier, including four buried in a mudslide in southern Chittagong district.
Lalmonirhat officials said the Jamuna river was in high spate and continued to rise its level as rainwater swept in from neighbouring India.
Floods worsened in the districts of Rajshahi and Chapainawbganj in the north and Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet in the northeast.
Local officials said on Wednesday new areas were inundated following intermittent but heavy rainfall.-Reuter
