SEOUL: North Korea has been unable to stem a cholera epidemic which broke out three months ago and up to 10 people are dying daily of the disease, South Korean monitors said Saturday.

Naewoe Press, which monitors North Korea, cited businessmen and returning travellers as saying travel to some of the worst affected areas of the country such as the cities of Wonsan and Kimchaek had been restricted.

But containment and quarantine measures had failed to stop the spread of the disease, which would probably be checked only by the onset of cooler weather in September, Naewoe said.-AFP
