Cambodia, Vietnam vow action on disputed border

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia and Vietnam will complete the marking of their disputed border by the end of this year, Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said on Friday.

"With regard to the border problem, the leaders of the two countries have agreed that the placing of border markers will be completed in the year 2000," Hor Namhong told reporters after talks with his visiting Vietnamese counterpart, Nguyen Dy Nien.

Historical rivals Vietnam and Cambodia have overlapping claims along some parts of their land and sea border. Cambodian students have in recent months held street protests over alleged Vietnamese border encroachment.

Hor Namhong said the two countries would also cooperate to promote the development of growth corridors linking Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.-Reuters
