KARACHI: The prices of polyester filament yarn increased up to 31 percent in just a couple of weeks widely disturbing the equilibrium of the market.

The manufacturers increased the prices of polyester filament yarn 150-Denier from Rs 38/kg to Rs 50/kg.

Similarly the prices of 75-Denier increased from Rs 48/kg to Rs 51/kg in the last 15 days.

The reason for the rise in prices is the increase in consumption of these two vital Deniers in export-related fabrics.

"Such sharp and sudden increase in the prices has disbalanced the market mechanism. The art and silk industry including exporters are deprived of getting polyester yarn at a reasonable prices," said a local importer of polyester filament yarn.

It made the products costly making incompetitive in the international market. The exporters express fear that they may loss substantial orders if current rising trend is not stopped by fiscal measures.

The local importers demanded for immediate notice of the situation and revise import duty on polyester filament yarn. The local manufacturers may be forced to reduce the high prices, they argued.

They also demanded withdrawal of five percent excise duty at import stage on polyester filament yarn.
