eMemories launches online photo service
PALO ALTO (Calif.): The Internet start-up eMemories.com will launch a new online photo service on Monday that enables consumers to post, share and order pictures online.
The Santa Monica, California-based company joins a group of start-ups competing in the online photo-sharing space, including Shutterfly.com, which was founded last year by Silicon Valley veteran Jim Clark.
eMemories plans to win customers by offering features that appeal to both low and high-tech types. Unlike some photo-sharing services that work only with digital cameras, eMemories will develop 35 mm film, and it does not require customers to scan their own photos to post them online.
In fact, it preserves many of the features from traditional photo developing, including envelopes for customers to mail in their film for development.
But instead of receiving a package of developed pictures in the mail, the customers will be able to review the photos online, order only those that they like and arrange to have copies sent to friends and relatives.
As part of the promotion surrounding its launch, eMemories said it would give away 500,000 disposable cameras to let people test its service.-Reuters
