Green revolution
Dr Norman asks
agri scientists
to strive for food security
RECORDER REPORT
FAISALABAD: A wide variety of elements and options of Green Revolution are still to be achieved and worked out to feed the rapidly growing population of the world expected to be more than eight billion in the year 2025 and it would be possible by increasing the production of wheat through generating new high yielding varieties resistant to acute diseases. This was stated by Dr Norman E Borlaug, the Noble Peace laureate and Father of Green Revolution, at a lecture in the University to the faculty members.
Dr Norman viewed that 11 percent soil of the world is open for agriculturists to expand production of cereals both horizontally and vertically. He said "we could turn our pessimism into optimism with reference to the food security, rising food and grain demand of the world can be met if we continue the techniques and technologies of Green Revolution".
Dr Borlaug advised the young faculty members to continue their endeavours in the direction of food security of the people by making a full benefit of the paradigms and generalisations of Green Revolution. "New hopes and new horizons are in front of the young lot of agricultural scientists". He said that Green Revolution is an unending process and a compatible and practicable philosophy to materialise the growing food demands of the world, and it should be made fruitful by transferring the agronomic practices to the farmers as well as to the young scientists.
He acknowledged the positive response of the Pakistani scientists and political leaders not only for coining the name of Green Revolution but also in implementing and spreading the said technique to the general masses.
Earlier, Prof Dr Riaz Hussain Qureshi, Vice Chancellor, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad in his address of welcome paying tributes to the scientist of extra ordinary virtue, said that Dr Norman Borlaug is a living legend, a man of ideals and a man of actions, whose untiring efforts and creditable services painted a glorious history in the realm of agriculture.
