KU senate moot Enhancement in govt grant demanded

KARACHI: The 13th meeting of Karachi University Senate was held at the campus on Saturday.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Dr. Zafar H. Zaidi, presided.

According to campus sources, Prof. Zaidi also presented the Vice-Chancellor's report which was appreciated.

Karachi University's Director Finance, S.M. Khalid presented the annual statements of accounts.

The participants of the meeting were of the view that the government grant to Karachi University was not sufficient and it should be enhanced adequately. They stressed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) should determine a criterion in this connection and the government grant should be given accordingly.

It was suggested that the budget deficit should not be met through internal borrowing and revenue generation sources should be found out.

The current budget deficit of Karachi University is stated to be about Rs 2.4 million. The participants of the meeting were of the view that the University's accounting has been streamlined and external auditing is being carried out.

It was urged that Karachi University should have a city campus so that people should not have to travel all the way to the main University campus to get their works done.

They were satisfied with the arrangements made for the conduct of the examinations.

Approval was accorded for the leave encashment of the University staff.

The participants of the meeting were not happy with the provision of degree-awarding status to the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) and urged that in future any such arrangement should be made with the approval of the University.

They were of the view that Karachi University should be compensated for the land which has been allotted to IBA. APP
