Water main bursts
RECORDER REPORT
KARACHI: The newly laid 100 million gallons per day (mgd) water pipeline burst and inundated main University Road near the offices of Sui Southern Gas Company on Saturday morning.
The 66 inches diameter water main burst would cause water closure and further disruption of water supply to the parts of districts Central and West where the supply has already been minimal for the last many days. The worst affected areas would include North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Federal B Area, and Buffer Zone.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) came to know after about two to three hours when million of gallons of water had already been wasted.
The water supply had been suspended and the repair had been started which would take about two days to be completed.
KWSB engineers said the new water main was laid in a haste and without checking/inspection before commissioning. They said the main was carrying more than 100 mgd to meet water shortage in the city.
They did not rule out the possibility of "mischief" by interested group of people supporting private water tanker business.
