Malaysia says capital markets not affected by Y2K

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's securities market regulator said on Saturday the nation's capital markets rolled into the new millennium without any Y2K computer bug problems and it was confident of smooth trading in the days ahead.

The Securities Commission said in a statement it was making tests to ensure the first trading day on Monday would be without glitches.

The commission regulates, among others, the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, the Commodities Exchange of Malaysia and the Malaysian Exchange of Securities Dealing and Automated Quotation Bhd (Mesdaq).

"The transition to the new millennium took place without any disruptions reported by capital market participants," the commission.

"End-to-end tests are also being conducted by market institutions to ensure that the first day of trading for the year 2000, which falls on 3 January 2000, runs smoothly.

"Based on the assessment of the reports received so far, the SC is confident that the market is ready for smooth trading on Monday, 3 January, 2000, and the days following," it said.-Reuters
