KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has, in coordination with District Municipal Corporations and Cantonment Board, announced the launch of a 15-day cleanliness drive starting from Saturday.

Sindh Chief Secretary at a high-level meeting had issued instructions for launch of a special campaign jointly by all the municipal corporations under the direct supervision of KMC Administrator Fahim Zaman Khan.

In this regard at a meeting with DMC and Cantonment Board officials, it was decided to launch the drive from January 15 to continue for 15 days.

For the purpose of a balanced drive, the city has been divided into a number of zones with a chief sanitary inspector to be the incharge of each zone. He will be empowered to utilise all available manpower and machinery.

Each zone will be provided 300 sanitary workers, 8-18 garbage lifting vans, one Bob Kit, 2 rotaracts, trailors and other machinery.

At the request of administrators of DMCs, the KMC would provide necessary equipment when required and each DMC will have to ensure the proper utilisation of manpower and the machinery provided for cleaning an area and removing garbage dumps.

It has been decided that for better working, there would be routine cleaning work from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., while the special cleaning drive will be carried out from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The district administrators have been directed to establish complaint centres in every zone where people could lodge their complaints which would be redressed within an hour.

During the campaign, KMC and DMCs would also take steps against stray dogs whereas anti-malaria spray also carried out.

The walls would be cleared of chalkings and encroachments removed with emphasis on cleaning of roads and footpaths.

KWSB has been asked to take steps for covering of open manholes and improvement in sewerage system. The parks department would bring improvement in parks, green belts and round-abouts.

In order to make the campaign a success, five committees consisting of district health officers have been formed with XEN B&R of DMC concerned, S.E. Sewerage, District Engineer KMC, Director Parks DMC and an officer of KMC's Parks and Land Department as members.
