Aptma decision to name convener held null & void

KARACHI: Humayun Elahi Shaikh has been removed as convener of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) by the Director Trade Organisation (DTO) on Friday.

The DTO has issued a notification which says that in the light of Sindh High Court decision, the resolution passed by the managing committee of APTMA in its meeting held on October 18, 1999, regarding the selection of Humayun Elahi Shaikh as aptma convener is not in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association of Aptma.

Therefore, the DTO has canceled the said resolution passed by the managing committee of Aptma.

The election for the office of Aptma chairman was due in October, 1999, which was not held on the plea that the chairman may continue without election.

This was challenged by members of the association and the case was taken to the Sindh High Court which decided in favour of election.

Fareed Jadoon, Vice-Chairman of Aptma, has been directed to take over the charge of Aptma and toimmediately hold the election for the office of chairman and hand over charge to the newly elected chairman.

Zahid Khan, Director-General, Export Promotion Bureau, Karachi, has been appointed to watch and supervise the election to ensure impartiality in the process and compliance.

A source close to the Sarhad Chamber of Commere and Industry told Iqbal Khattak of Business Recorder on Friday in Peshawar that Humayun Ilahi Sheikh used all tricks in the bank to deny NWFP's Mohsin Aziz to lead the association.

According to the body's constitution, the year 2000 is the NWFP's turn to hold the highest slot in the association's organisational set up.
