20000112Concern voiced at FSC verdict on Muslim Family Law Ord '61
KARACHI: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) for Peoples's Right has expressed concern over judgment of the Federal Shariah Court (FSC) striking some provisions of the Muslim Family Law Ordinance, 1961 as un-Islamic.
JAC spokesman in a press release said that the FSC has no jurisdiction to rule upon personal law thereby interfering with the rights of women and orphaned grandchildren in family matters.
It also said the Joint Action Committee has always held the view that important issues require debate in the parliament.
The Muslim family Laws Ordinance 1961 needed to be strengthened rather than eroded in this manner.
The JAC called upon all human rights and women rights organisations to come together for discussion on this judgement.-PPI
