Traders acknowledge cop's sacrifice

KARACHI: Raees Ashraf Tar Mohammad, Chairman , Pakistan Commodity Traders Association, has announced a donation of Rs 100,000 on behalf of the association for the family of deceased Head Constable Umer Daraz, who lost his life in a bid to foil an attempt at armed robbery in Jodia Bazar area on Thursday last.
Umer Daraz was posted at the Rambharti Street, where a number of bank branches and business houses are located.
In the afternoon of December 30,1999, seven fully armed robbers, followed an employee of Iftekhar Allahwala & Co, when he was returning to the office after withdrawing cash from bank.
The robbers snatched the cash from the employee and then attempted to enter the office of Allahwala. They fired shots from outside the office which resulted in bullet injury to one of the visitors.
Upon facing resistance from the office guard, the robbers tried to escape. However, the policemen on duty chased them for some distance and a shoot-out ensued during which Head Constable Umer Daraz received fatal bullet injuries.
A private guard and a pedestrian were also killed in the shoot-out.
