JPMC annual

symposium tomorrow

KARACHI: The 37th annual medical symposium of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Karachi will be inaugurated on Monday. Chief Executive, General Pervez Musharraf, has been requested to perform the inauguration.

This was stated by Prof. Rashid Jooma, convener of the symposium, addressing a news conference on Saturday.

He said the three-day moot that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the institution, will highlight the history of the JPMC and its role towards the provision of health care.

"Fresh features of the scientific programme, this year, are the seven pre-symposium workshops and a session on nursing sciences in the platform presentations," Prof. Jooma said adding the workshops are designed to train and familiarize young doctors with the latest medical technologies and the medical uses of information technology.

About 500 delegates would attend the moot at which some 100 scientific papers would be presented.

The plenary session to be held on Monday after the inauguration, will be chaired by the Director General of Health, Gen. Ahsen Ahmed and Prof. S. M. Rab, Prof. Majeed Baluch and Dr. Tasnim, will speak on the past, present and future of the JPMC respectively.

Prof. Jooma said that JPMC is visited by about 700,000 outpatients every year and more than 27,000 operations are carried out and it provides an effective emergency service in the city. Nearly 120,000 patients are dealt within the accident and emergency department each year, he added.

He said that the annual budget of JPMC is about Rs. 300 million annually and claimed that it provides services worth Rs. 1.3 billion annually.ÑAPP
