Annan sends

personal envoy

to Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: A personal representative of the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has arrived here en route to Afghanistan as head of a special mission, which will later visit the neighbouring countries also.

The delegate, Francese Vendrell, an assistant secretary general at the United Nations, will be spending two weeks making contacts with the leaders of the Taliban administration and also the neighbouring governments to sum up a report on situation in the civil war-torn country and some possible solutions to its problems.

Vendrell served in East Timor (Indonesia) last year.
