KARACHI: The value-added textile associations have welcomed the appointment of Mirza Qamar Baig as secretary, Ministry of Commerce, and said that his long and rich experience in the textile field would help him better understand problems of the exporters.

S.M.A. Rizvi, Convenor, Council of Textile Associations, said that Baig had worked as commercial counsellor in France; vice chairman Export Promotion Bureau; director general, textile quota management; chairman Pakistan Steel, and Chief Secretary Balochistan. By virtue of serving in a variety of vital positions, Baig has good industrial and administrative experience.

He said that Baig was not only bold and dynamic but also easily accessible which was the best quality. Unless an officer has direct contact with individuals he cannot understand the problems and provide suitable solution particularly those of trade, commerce and exports, he added.

Javed Chinoy, Chairman Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Prgmea), Central, has said that Mirza Qamar Baig has vast knowledge of the textile industry especially of quota of fairs which would help him to do his job fairly well.

He said that as director general textile quota management and vice chairman of EPB Baig was the architect of an aggressive textile quota policy and during his tenure a number of problems related to exports were resolved.

Jamil-ur-Rehman, Horani, vice chairman of the Pakistan Commercial Exporters of Towels Association, has expressed the hope that the appointment of Baig as commerce secretary would augur well for the development of national exports and for making export procedures more smooth and conducive to achieve the export target for the current year.
