DMC East claims

achievements from

cleanliness drive

KARACHI: The District Municipal Corporation, East, removed thousands of tonnes of garbage during the 17-day city-wide cleanliness campaign.

A report by the DMC's monitoring team, however, said that despite improvement in the garbage dumping position, there is still need for lifting big dumps of building material at different places in the district.

It recommended placement of containers at 17 different positions in Landhi-Korangi area.

The report said that gutters were overflowing at over 122 places in the district, of which 30 percent complaints were attended by KWSB. However, sewerage flows could yet be witnessed at a number of places.

According to the DMC, the KWSB has left pits on roads unfilled at more than 210 places, as a result of which the roads cannot be repaired.

DMC East has alleged that KWSB digs up roads or carries out road cutting without obtaining NOC from the Corporation which causes grave problems for it.

The report has particularly mentioned about roads constructed in Tariq Road Commercial area which, it says, had not been touched for years and were under occupation of residents or shopkeepers who have blocked them with encroachments. It says that around 100,000 sq feet area of roads has been constructed or repaired during the cleanliness drive.

"Over 40,000 tonnes of garbage was removed and dumped at Jam Chakro Landfill site and another 300 truck-loads of garbage dumped at Jheel Park landfill site," the DMC claimed in its report.

During the campaign, the report says, 800 street lights were made functional and six vehicles repaired and made roadworthy.

The DMC is re-utilising the empty oil drums as dust bins and 20 of such drums have been installed in Tariq Road Model area. The DMC has repaired public toilets at Tariq Road and made then serviceable.

During the campaign DMC East cleaned 80 parks, pruned many of the trees and planted some 1000 new saplings. Central islands on all roads in the district were cleaned and green belts improved.

The Corporation removed all such hoardings, sign boards and pole boards which were causing traffic blockade. The electrical and mechanical department of DMC is printing numbers on electric poles to facilitate people in making complaint about a non-functional street light by just quoting the number on the pole.ÑAPP
