committee

RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: Inam Akhtar, secretary, All Pakistan Textile Processing Mills Association (Aptpma), has urged Commerce Minister Abdul Razak Dawood, to provide due representation to the value-added textile industry on the committee framing the trade policy.

In a letter to the minister, he pointed out that Razak Dawood had called a meeting of value-added sector on January 26, 2000, for the formation of trade policy, where the most important sector of value-addition, that is textile processing, was left out.

He said that the minister had announced the formation of committees to rectify the lacunas in the trade policy 1999-2000. While forming the committee, textile processors were ignored.

He said that the whole value-added export by the commercial exporters was processed by textile processing units and this sector had some very specific problems which needed immediate attention of the government, like availability of infrastructural facilities, removal of anomaly in custom tariff with regard to import of machinery, spare parts, and the problem of sales tax.
