Textile quota

exports up by 12pc

KARACHI: Textile quota exports rose by 12.6 percent in value and by 11.32 percent in quantity during the first quarter of 2000-2001 compared with the same period of last year. The growth in value and quantity was registered in exports to the USA, European Union (EU), Canada and Turkey.

According to the provisional figures of export performance quota released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) the value of textile exports to the USA rose by 20.35 percent, to EU by 4.97 percent, and to Turkey by 469.9 percent. However, the value of exports to Canada declined by 23.15 percent . In terms of quantity quota exports increased by 10 percent in case of the USA, 6.20 percent for EU and 517.25 for Turkey.

Utilisation of quota in different categories was 5.47 percent for USA, 6.90 percent for EU, 9.34 percent for Canada and 4.13 percent for Turkey.

The average unit price of quota exports to the USA during the first quarter of 2000-2001 rose by 9.41 percent, while the unit price for EU declined by 1.16 percent, by 9.95 percent in case of EU, 9.95 percent, in case of Canada and 7.67 percent in case of exports to Turkey.

Total quota exports to the USA during the first quarter stood at 143.49 million sq. meters worth 191.62 million dollars compared with 130.44 million sq. meters worth 159.21 million dollars during the same period last year. The average unit price worked out to be 1.34 dollar compared with 1.22 dollar earlier, an increase of 9.41 percent.

Quota exports to EU were 336.08 million sq. meters worth 179.74 million dollars this quarter, compared with 316.45 million sq. meters worth 171.22 million dollars in the corresponding period of the previous year. The unit price recorded was 0.53 dollar which was slightly less than the last year quarter.

Exports to Canada were 7.08 million sq. meters worth 8.48 million dollars this quarter compared with 8.29 million sq. meters worth 11.03 million dollars last quarter. The average unit prices declined by 9.95 percent compared with last quarter.

Quota exports to Turkey were 24.49 million sq. meters worth 5.80 million dollars this quarter compared with 3.97 million sq. meters worth 1.02 million dollars last quarter. The average unit price declined by 7.67 percent.
