Govt asked to extend amnesty scheme deadline

LAHORE: The acting president, Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Sheikh Mohammad Asif, has asked the government to extend the deadline of the amnesty scheme announced for legalisation of smuggled goods.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, he claimed that due to recession in the market, the traders community could not prepare themselves to legalise smuggled items under the amnesty scheme announced by the government thus the previous deadline of April 12 should be extended up to June 30.

The LCCI acting president said that the government, however, should have close vigilance at all exit and entry points of the smuggled goods from where these items pour into the country, so that the supply of the same could be brought to the grinding halt. The extension in the deadline, in the meanwhile, would help the traders community to legalise their items.

A number of delegation of the traders community also met with the LCCI acting president and apprised him of the problems and difficulties they were facing in availing of the opportunity to legalise their goods.
