Dairy plant in Karachi to go into commercial operation soon

KARACHI: A new dairy plant, the first in private sector in Karachi, will go into commercial operation shortly for production of bacteria-free chilled, pasturised and sterilised milk in packing.

The plant is being set up in Deh Konkar at a cost of Rs 120 million and it estimates to capture 25-30 percent market.

The plant's foundation stone laying ceremony was held here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Malir Deputy Commissioner, said there is a great need for supply of hygienically produced milk for citizens of Karachi.

He observed that at present bulk of milk supply is through shops and milkmen, who do not care for health and hygiene.

According to him only 1.5 percent of milk supplied to the city is bacteria-free which is alarming for health.

The plant will also produce dairy products like cheese, flavored milk and yogurt, ice cream, juices and curd.

The plant machinery is being imported from abroad and the supply of milk will be ensured from its own farm which will be run by consortium of baffalo cattle farm owners. APP
