Economic Survey 1999 - 2000
FOREWORD
Pakistan's economy is facing multidimensional challenges which include restoring investor's confidence, reinvigorating growth, restoring macroeconomic stability, reducing poverty, improving social indicators and improving governance. There is no quick solution to these challenges. A multidimensional strategy is required to tackle deep-rooted long-standing structural issues. A concerted and sustained effort is required to steer the economy towards growth and stability. A beginning has been made in the outgoing fiscal year t revive the sagging economy and steer the nation toward self-reliance.
The Economic Survey 1999-2000 has carried out a detailed assessment of the developments that have taken place on the economic scene during 1999-2000. It has rightly pointed out that the economic performance of the outgoing fiscal year offers grounds for optimism. We have performed reasonably well in several areas through adroit economic management but there are weaker areas as well which should get serious attention of the government. The Economic survey 1999-2000 has very ably documented the positive developments but at the same time identified the areas for further improvement. This document is concise but comprehensive. It has analyzed the economic performance on the basis of 9 to 10 months information of the current fiscal year. It is and useful document for economic managers, students of economics, academicians, researchers and above all to those who have interest on Pakistan's economy. The Economic Adviser and his staff deserve compliments for their hard work.
